BITS – HP LABS INDIA PhD FELLOWSHIP
for Research related to Information Technologies

Mission

Birla Institute of Technology & Science (BITS) is an all-India institute for higher learning, powered by strong and institutionalized industry linkages.

BITS, Pilani and HP Labs India jointly offer a unique PhD fellowship for research in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) relevant to fast-growing markets like India. This fellowship was instituted to attract candidates of exceptional abilities for research in selected areas. It offers candidates an opportunity to work in the highest academic standards with HP Labs.

Candidates with Higher Degree in Engineering (ME/MTech/ MS), interested in doctoral work may apply. Exceptional candidates who are in the top 3 ranks in their class in their First Degree (BE/BTech/MCA/MSc) may apply. Current areas for the fellowships include:

  • Web 2.0 and Social Networks
  • Multimodal Interfaces
  • Document Image Processing

Selected candidates having Higher Degree will need to pass the PhD qualifying examination before beginning the PhD thesis work, which is a part of the PhD fellowship. Selected candidates possessing First Degree will need to do three semesters of course-work at BITS, Pilani campus before appearing in the PhD Qualifying Examination.

The fellowship is offered initially for one year, and then renewed annually, for up to 3 years, on satisfactory performance. The candidate would receive a monthly stipend of Rs.20,000 and HP Labs India would pay the fees to BITS. For the duration spent at HP Labs India, Bangalore, an additional monthly allowance of Rs.20,000 to cover off-campus living expenses is available. The fellowship also covers expenses of presenting a paper at one selected International Conference within the fellowship period.
