Goal

Develop the technology foundations and tools for the next generation of enterprise information management systems; facilitate a comprehensive approach to information which bridges the current divides between structured data and unstructured content, between local workgroup knowledge bases, centrally managed sources and the partner and wider web community.

Impact

Enable a step change in the ability of enterprises to harness all of their information and knowledge assets to improve business effectiveness.

Research

To bring this about we are applying our deep competence in web information systems, particularly the semantic web, to the enterprise. In order to:develop an open, extensible information fabric that supports web scale integration of diverse information sources and knowledge bases

  • seed an eco-system of information services which extract structure, mine patterns, discover links between items across the fabric
  • develop a lightweight, resilient approach to information modelling that accommodates the heterogeneity, scale and rate of change of information relevant to the enterprise
  • couple these to effective end user tools for contextual delivery, search and discovery - enabling knowledge workers to both exploit and enhance the collective knowledge base
  • validate these technologies against specific vertical domains (such as IT Service Management) and horizontal tasks
