People are mobile. People interact through media-- sight and sound.  People want a converged experience that allows them to communicate, collaborate, and entertain, regardless of their device, network, and location.

The HP Labs Mobile & Media Systems Lab is creating next-generation mobile & media experiences and developing the enabling technologies to make them real.  We focus on communication, collaboration, and gaming.  Our researchers (M&Ms) have expertise in experience design, media, networking, security, mobility, sensor, web, and device technologies and are located in the US, Japan, and England.  We collaborate with industrial, academic, and business partners, and we create strategic linkages between our collaborators in the context of mobile and media experiences and technologies.

MMSL's research themes include:

  • Next-generation collaboration, communication, community, and gaming experiences that bridge mobile and web domains.
  • Immersive media experiences for face-to-face communications and gaming.
  • Context-aware media experience: Create, publish, and experience.
  • Personal sensing devices for mobility and media.
  • Streaming media over wired and wireless networks, including peer-to-peer and overlay networks.
  • Security for media including digital rights management and secure streaming and secure transcoding.
  • Network monitoring and management for distributed networked systems.
  • Media systems architecture for next-generation mobile network infrastructures.
